Ok, I am pretty sure that the noise isn't due to me. I just
terminated all my processes and Vass says the noise has not
stopped. So I rescind my CD offer :-).

I believe the noise is coming from the swap disk, not the disks
where the traces are kept. If my sequential accesses to the
traces were the culprit, you would have noticed the problem
earlier, especially last spring and this fall, when activity
was particularly heavy. At the time of your note, amir was
running a 85M process whose resident set size was 84M and there
was an X server process that was huge in addition to a bunch
of other large programs, so my guess is that the noise is
coming from random accesses to the swap disk on that machine.
