FYI, I'm going to honour the message below by shutting down
fielder at least for the weekend. I don't believe any of
you are using it on a regular basis any more. If you need
fielder, come over to my desk (in 224) and turn it back on.

        To the Campus Community:

The winter cold predicted for this weekend and for early next week is
expected to push electrical demand in our area to maximum levels. Seattle
City Light has asked its customers to conserve electrical power during
this period. The university is one of Seattle City Light's largest
customers, and we all have an obligation to participate in these
        conservation efforts.

You can help by taking the following actions, starting today and
continuing through the cold weather period:

Turn off unnecessary lights. Turn off lights when you leave a room and
when you leave at the end of the day. Consider relying on natural
        lighting where possible.

Shutdown personal computers and peripherals at the end of the day, and
        during long periods of inactivity.

If possible, avoid activities which use electricity in the morning hours
when demand is at its highest.

Avoid using portable heaters, hair dryers, and other heating appliances,
        particularly early in the morning.

Close laboratory fumehood sashes when not in use.

Use the stairs instead of the elevator.

Shutdown any other equipment that is not essential.

It is expected that these simple actions, along with other actions to be
taken by Facilities Services and actions by other Seattle City Light
customers, will help avert a critical power shortage in our region.
        Thank you for your efforts.
