On a concrete level, one thing that our group in particular needs to do is
to work on our marketing. During the grad student gripe session, one
person noted (in passing, while making an unrelated comment) that he just
didn't look at the programming languages posters at affiliates, because
they were boring. This comment was partly influenced by this particular
student's lack of interest in PL, but I think this attitude is more common
than we like to admit. I know this is something I've mentioned before to
some people in our group, and it's not clear to me what "better marketing"
translates into, but I am certainly going to be thinking about this over
break.
We need more pictures, we need to express our "big-picture" vision to
people (we have one, but I think it often gets lost in the details).
Maybe we need to have a more megalomaniacal vision to begin with. I don't
know. Anyway, I'm going to think about it.
