I always enjoy a good 590L discussion! As for a topic, is there something
that would be a good preparation for the 590 Craig is teaching in the
spring? Language design is the topic, right?
Perhaps one idea might be to pick a selection of recent "language design"
research papers (e.g. Vault, Units, AspectJ, Guava, MultiJava, ArchJava)
and critique them:
* What was the purpose of the language design?
* How does the language stand up to design criteria, e.g. orthogonality?
* What is the technical (theoretical) contribution of the language?
* How is the language evaluated? Is it practical?
Another topic (originally suggested by Matthai, I think) is a language
theory seminar going through sections of Benjamin Pierce's book (and
perhaps other material). I think that could be very interesting and
useful, as well.
Jonathan :-)
