I am planning to reorganize Solaris /uns this coming weekend, because
right now it's in an annoying state. [0]

With luck, Solaris /uns/bin will soon be a thing of the past. Instead,
post-reorganization, you should use /uns/sparc-sunos5.5.1/bin or
/uns/sparc-sunos5.8/bin depending on your platform. You should also set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to use /uns/sparc-sunosXXXX/lib.

This may cause problems for our group if we've been building Vortex with
/uns/bin/gcc (which, btw, is an ancient version to begin with...) rather
than /usr/bin/gcc. Is this the case?

[0] i.e., the binaries for SunOS 5.5.1 and 5.8 are mixed together in
/uns/bin, and I'm not sure which binaries work on which platform, and I'm
afraid to upgrade broken things in /uns/bin because it might break
compatibility in weird ways for SunOS 5.5.1 users.
