Does anybody know the status of Cecil/Vortex on Linux? Some students are
trying to use it for 505 and are having trouble, as am I. For example,
the code they are starting with is in /cse/courses/cse505/02au/hw5. If I
start up Vortex and build (my copy of) that code (the main file is
self.cecil), everything seems to go ok, but no executable is generated.
Others have said that they instead get compile errors. And when I run the
interpreter and load self.cecil into it, I get errors like

eval error: declaration of new global generic_op_string will be shadowed
    by a non-local variable

Unfortunately, I can't compare right now with solaris, because /usr/local
on solaris, which has things like necessary C++ libraries, is down.

Anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if we're doing something obvious wrong,
or if there's some other fix that you can think of, or if I should just
tell people to use solaris (assuming things will work fine there).

    Thanks.

    Todd
