    Subject: Internships at Microsoft Research

    Dear Colleague

Can I ask you to make your PhD students aware that the Systems,
Networking and Distributed Computing Group at Microsoft Research in
Cambridge, England has a number of research internships available for
    the 2003 season.

Internships provide an opportunity for young researchers to get
practical experience of industrial research and to work with an
outstanding team with an international reputation. An internship usually
lasts 12 weeks and most interns come for the summer, but not exclusively
    so.

Successful applications are normally from PhD students well established
in their research programme, who have strong academic references from
their parent institution and who are working in areas relevant to the
    group's research themes, which include:

    Distributed Computing
    Optimistic concurrency control and reconciliation
    Peer-to-peer systems
IPv6 networking, especially mobility, security and QoS integration
    Systems aspects of wireless networking
Bandwidth management for simple networks (e.g., home a/v systems)
Theory and applications of network measurement, particularly congestion
    pricing
Instrumentation and performance modelling of distributed applications
Analysis of the causes and impact of system failure
Operating Systems techniques to reduce the impact of latency on
    performance.

Microsoft Research meets travel expenses, pays a salary and provides
assistance in locating accommodation and general arrangements. Each
intern is associated with a Microsoft researcher who acts as mentor. The
mentor will have identified one or more projects for the intern to
choose from. In addition to working with their mentor, interns are
encouraged to join in the activities of the Cambridge systems,
Networking and Distributed Computing group as a whole.

Some information about recent intern projects in the group can be found
    at http://www.research.microsoft.com/~aherbert/intern.asp.

Applicants should send a current CV to cambhr@microsoft.com.

We are also keen to hear from recent PhDs or students close to
completion interested in post doc researcher opportunities.

    Best Regards
