How to Use the Vortex Compiler and Environments
8 Installation
This section describes how to install and configure Cecil/Vortex for your site. You should also refer to the README file in the root directory of the vortex distribution.
- Select a disk to install Cecil/Vortex. You will need around 50Mb of disk space.
- Obtain a vortex.tar.gz file that is appropriate for your architecture/OS from the Cecil home page (http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/cecil).
- Uncompress and extract the vortex tree using gzip & tar.
- Edit vortex.cshrc, run-vortex, ArchConfig.sun4, and compileMachineNames as described in the README file.
This creates a sharable, baseline tree for Cecil/Vortex. If only one person is going to use the Cecil installation, then it is probably simplest to place your source and gen directories right in the baseline tree. If more than one user will be writing Cecil programs, then they will need their own copies of any Cecil source code they plan to modify. If several people are going to be making substantial changes to Cecil compiler/stdlib code you'll probably want to set up some kind of revision control system. We use CVS, available via ftp from ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/.
