plotting questions?

Suppose you had a data set in which each record was an x,y coordinate
and a color/intensity pair.... how would you graph that? John and I
have unsuccessfully tried to figure out how to do this with excell or
gnuplot to no avail (the scatterplot part is easy... the color/intensity
is the problem). Anyone with experience here?

P.S. This is like Brad Chen's cache "hotness" graph... anyone know how
that was done?
