Until further notice, Port 1 on the etherswitch should be set to
half-duplex. Either the upstream device is not a switch, or they interact
poorly, or the bios on our switch is out of date. I burned a day's trace on
that one (I think I first got clued in when I noticed that I could transfer
my 30MB trace files faster from across the country than from downstairs...
about 50 times faster)Luckily duke and Berkeley don't have our networking
problems.

If you've been doing work on the cluster that involves measuring network
performance to a computer not in the cluster then... well... your numbers
may not quite add up.
