Subject: UW/MSR summer institute
Dear Participants of the 1999 University of Washington/Microsoft Research
Summer Institute on the Technologies of Invisible Computing:
The start of our meeting is fast approaching and this message is long
overdue. I'd like to fill you in on our plans for the meeting and ask
you to consult our web sites:
http://www.cs.washington.edu/mssi/tic/
http://research.microsoft.com/tic/default.htm
The flow of the meeting is as follows:
Day 1: 10 minute introductions by all the participants
(this is the only portion you need to prepare before arriving)
-> get a sense of the activities in industry and academia
Day 2: breakout groups to survey technology areas and report
(e.g., wireless networking, physical interfaces, etc.)
-> make sure everyone is cognizant of important trends
Day 3: transfer from UW to Semi-ah-moo with an optional
afternoon "show-and-tell" for those of you that want
to bring demos or just start smaller focused discussions
-> relax at a new location and have less formal interactions
Day 4: orthogonal groups around application areas with reports
(e.g., medical, office-work, home, etc.)
-> understand how different areas can leverage the same
technologies and infrastructure
Day 5: summarization and attempt to put together a
research agenda for this emerging community
-> idenitify common needs/goals and leveraging opportunities
Several UW grad students will be on hand with web-connected laptops to help
each group prepare their presentations and perform web/bibliographic
searches. We will have data projectors and overhead projectors available.
We will be collecting the introductions, group presentations, and research
agenda and making it available on the web to the general public.
At this point, you should only need to prepare a 10 minute presentation
on your area of expertise and research activities (approx. 5-7 foils),
make sure that Gretchen Cox (at gretc@cs.washington.edu) is aware of your
travel schedule and whether you are bringing any significant others along,
and have a safe trip to Seattle.
We look forward to hosting you in Seattle and see you on the 18th (at the
Henry Art Gallery for the welcoming reception).
Warmest regards,
Gaetano Borriello, UW
Turner Whitted, MSR
