I don't have a huge objection agaist NFS, except for the migration
cost. The current Linux boxes depend heavily on files under /afs, and
moving all of them without breaking any is a real pain in the butt. Is
there a way to do migration incrementally (eg, union file system)?

i think it would be best to make a clean break of it if we decide
to go that way....it does mean changing the paths of things, but
the general scheme doesn't have to change

redoing the authentication system is going to be considerably more
painful than changing /afs -> /systems, but i think it needs to be
reworked in any case.

we'd obviously have to go through and make a real plan about what was
going to be done in advance. and it wouldn't be an afternoon project
either. i would suspect a good 4 weeks to set up the server, migrate
services, redo passwords, etc
