Ed gave me this to handle. I've looked at the proposal, and there are
only five pages of "meat", most of which is geo-mumble to me (and
probably you). If you have any interest in helping out (I pulled out
your names from a combination of his message and skimming the proposal
--- if I missed anybody, let me know), please contact Mark G. directly
(and please cc me); I can't speak to his computing sophistication, but
he's a really strong scientist, who I interacted with briefly over a
decade ago.

Thanks,

David

Subject: Need some advice and help on an NSF/ITR proposal

Ed:

I need a bit of help with an NSF/ITR proposal. I hope that you remember
me.
I was one of the guys you helped out back in the mid-eighties when I was
looking for PYI funds from Digital.

A group of us in Geological Sciences (along with some colleagues at CWU
and
UC Santa Barbara) submitted a mid-level ITR pre-proposal last year for a
distributed computing/ remote procedure call platform aimed at
supporting
computing infrastructure in the Earth Sciences, specifically
geochemistry
and geophysical fluid dynamics. I've attached a copy of this
pre-proposal
for reference. The reviews were quite good (ratings mostly excellent)
and
along with the panel comments the consensus was that the idea was worth
funding and the time ripe for such an effort, BUT, we needed to include
a
computer scientist as one of the PIs if we were to be seriously
considered.
We were not encouraged to submit a full proposal. I spoke at length
with
program directors at NSF (both in ITR and EAR) and was strongly
encouraged
to resubmit. I plan to do so for the Nov 13 deadline and I am writing
to
seek your help in identifying a faculty member in CS that might like to
participate in our effort. I'm not looking for a "token" PI. I would
like
whoever gets involved to really take an active role and help us out,
because
I appreciate the reviewer's and panel's remarks. I know what I want to
do
but I would really enjoy working with someone (and their students) who
are
experts in how to do it. In any event, if you could help me identify
one of
your colleagues who might be interested I would be most appreciative,
and
maybe a nice little joint project will result.

Thanks much for your time,

-Mark
