Subject: Solaris /uns reorganization

I'm repeating my post in uw-cs.apps.announce.uns because our group is one
of the few that uses Suns, and probably not everyone in the group reads
the newsgroup.

Solaris /uns is dead. Long live Solaris /uns.
I have wiped the old Solaris /uns, which intermingled sparc32/sparc64
executables as well as binaries built against both SunOS 5.5.1 and 5.8.
The new /uns is partitioned by platform [0]:
/uns/sparc64-sunos5.8
/uns/sparc64-sunos5.5.1
/uns/sparc32-sunos5.8
Platform-neutral files, e.g. config files and includes, are still found in
/uns and /uns/share.
A readme for users and maintainers and current package list [1] are at
/uns/README-sun-uns
/uns/PACKAGES-sun-uns
To cut to the chase:
If you only use one Sun platform, and this is the only Unix platform you
ever use, then you can hardcode the new architecture-specific bin/ and
lib/ paths into your PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
If you use multiple Sun platforms, or if you use multiple Unices, you
might be interested in the path-setting script that I have placed at
/uns/share/etc/uns-path.csh
/uns/share/etc/uns-path.sh
which are suitable for sourcing in your .cshrc and .bashrc respectively
(examples of how to source them are provided in the files). If you source
these files rather than copying them, then you will not have to worry the
next time we reorgaize your favorite Unix platform's /uns.

[0] I do not know of any sparc32-sunos5.5.1 machines in the dept., which
explains the absence of this directory.
[1] Obviously, I have not had time to reinstall all the packages that were
in old Solaris /uns, nor do I intend to---partly because a lot of them
were probably unused, as evidenced by their ancient mod dates, and partly
because I am too lazy. If you need package X, install it yourself or
pester a maintainer (possibly me) to do it for you.
