It does seem to be the case that the linux version is flaky. It seems to depend
on which machine you run on. I haven't tracked down why things fail; I suspect
the conservative GC. The 2 solaris versions seem stable, and the solaris8
version (& machines) are probably what we should direct students to use. The
windows version also seems to be stable, more so than linux, although it's been
tested much less than the solaris8 version.
