Even if we use a bootable cd or smart NIC, seems like we'd want to have a
special archival and/or control host in the rack to hold the trusted
copies of all the OSes we support; that is, assuming we'd much rather be
downloading the OS over a 1Gbps or 100Mbps LAN rather than the Internet
(1-2Mbps).

no question, there's just a difference

two other items:

does exist a 'wired for management' spec at
http://developer.intel.com/ial/WfM. after lookin at the spec its not
clear how they do authentication, and of course when there might
a usable product based on the specs

david reminds me that there are boot prom solutions. unfortuantely
OS and nic support for them is somewhat spotty, and we'd have to
add functions to the boot rom, but it is another possibility.
for some reason all the support seems to be for ISA cards
